Milica Ševkušić, EIFL Open Access Programme Project Coordinator, will present at the International Scientific Conference: Scientific and Publishing Integrity in Biomedicine, organized by the Macedonian Association of Medical Editors (MAME), Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts (MASA) and the Faculty of Medicine of the Ss. Cyril and Methodius University (UKIM), in Skopje, North Macedonia.

EIFL Open Access Programme Project Coordinator Milica Ševkušić will be one of the speakers at the online training workshop ‘Digital Tools for the Epigraphist’, organized by the Prometheus – Promoting Universal Values through Digital Epigraphy and Cultural Heritage - project. The workshop is co-funded by the European Commission under the Creative Europe programme. 

Ševkušić’s presentation will focus on copyright and open licences.

Training public library IT staff in Ghana

SCILLS programme grantee meeting

President Ramaphosa: Please sign new Copyright Bill

In a letter to Cyril Ramaphosa, President of the Republic of South Africa, EIFL has urged the President to sign into law the new Copyright Amendment Bill [B13F - 2017] without further delay. 

The Bill, amending the 1978 Copyright Act, was approved by both Houses of Parliament on 29th February 2024, and sent to the President for assent. The Bill introduces new exceptions for libraries, education and people with disabilities, and it brings copyright rules in South Africa into the digital age.

EIFL-PLIP visit to Malawi

Ramune Petuchovaite, Manager of the EIFL Public Library Innovation Programme (EIFL-PLIP),  will travel to Malawi for meetings with the leadership of the National Library Service of Malawi to discuss digital transformation of public libraries and capacity building of public librarians. 

Petuchovaite will also use the opportunity of her visit to meet representatives of other government ministries and agencies concerned with resourcing public libraries with digital technology for public access.

EIFL OA publishing agreements cover 2,548 journals

We have updated the list of journals in which corresponding authors from our partner countries can publish in open access for free or at discounted Article Processing Charges (APCs). 

Through agreements with publishers negotiated by EIFL, corresponding authors from 37 countries can publish in 2,548 hybrid and fully open access journals published by 13 publishers, across a wide array of disciplines.  

EIFL-PLIP T-break: Inclusive library services

Public librarians who have completed training-of-trainers programmes organized by the EIFL Public Library Innovation Programme (EIFL-PLIP) and partners in Ghana, Kenya, Namibia, Uganda and Zambia are invited to attend this informal online knowledge sharing event - a ‘T-break’ for trainers - on the topic, ‘Inclusive Library Services for Persons with Print Disabilities’. The T-break is co-organized with the IFLA Libraries Serving Persons with Print Disabilities (LPD) Section.

The workshop will focus on the development of supportive legislation and policies for open science and research assessment reforms. EIFL is an Open4UA project partner.

Thailand: EIFL supports exceptions for sound recordings

In a public consultation on Thailand’s draft copyright law, EIFL welcomed a proposed amendment that aligns existing copyright exceptions with new rights being introduced on the use of sound recordings. 

Thailand is amending the Copyright Act (2022) to implement the WIPO Performances and Phonograms Treaty (WPPT). The WPPT grants performers (such as actors, singers and musicians) and producers (such as record companies) new rights over the reproduction and distribution of sound recordings (such as vinyl records, CDs and digital formats).

Digital learning @ Ghana public libraries

Computers and the internet have the potential to open up a world of educational and learning opportunities for school children. However, schools in Ghana face challenges in using digital technology: they have limited network connections, unreliable power and low numbers of devices. Some schools have no ICT infrastructure. 

Open Access Summit

The summit will bring together local and international experts to discuss challenges and opportunities in open access and open education. Ševkušić’s presentation is titled, ‘Quality vs. Prestige in Scholarly Publishing’.
