  *  Georgian Library Association is one of the founders of Georgian Adult Education Association, January 2005. 

  *  Ministry of Culture, Monument Protection and Sports initiates project "New Georgian books for public libraries", in cooperation with Georgian Publishers and Booksellers Associacion and Georgian Library Association. December 2004 - February 2005. 

  *  Multilateral Seminar on Libraries Strategies in South Caucasus Organized by the Council of Europe / STAGE project in co-operation of the Ministry of Culture, Monument Protection and Sports of Georgia. Tbilisi 18-20 November 2004 (Appeal to the Parliaments and Governments of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia - in English and Russian)

  *  A group of librarians from Azerbaijan and Georgia visited Lithuanian Research Libraries Consortium (link to LMBA). November 2004. 

  *  Establishing new partnership links :  I. Garibashvili, President of GeLA, visited Sweden and Finland. August - September 2004. 

  *  Georgian Library Association supports expedition Vittfarne from Sweden (following the expedition of Ingvar in 1040 traced by rune stones and "Georgian Chronicles") and organizes meetings with participants of expedition in public libraries, June - August 2004. 

  *  Libraries of French Cultural Center, German Media and Information Center of Goethe Institute, British Council Georgia joined to establish a "working practice network" for Georgian librarians. July 2004. 

  *  Tbilisi Book Festival. June 2004. 

  *  2 new "American Corners" opened in regional libraries. May 2004. 

  *  The third Georgian National Library Week takes place on 23-30 Apr 2004. 

  *  "Buch und Bibliothek" February 2, 2004 issue publishes an article (Engl) by I. Garibashvili on the state and activities in Georgian libraries. (Pdf. version of the article). 

  *  Georgian Library Association became a National member of IFLA, December 2003

  *  The assessment/contest between school libraries was initiated by Georgian Library Association, Book Lovers' Association and The Ministry of Education. Winners were awarded with special prizes, December 2003  

  *  The presentation of the new directory "Libraries of Southern Caucasus and Who is Who in Library sphere" published by the Association of Information Specialists (Georgia), Armenian Library Association and Azerbaijani Library Development Association, November 8, 2003

  *  First Regional Adult Education Fair in Georgia, October 17 – 19, 2003 

  *  Mr. Irakli Garibashvili took part in the General Assembly of the project eIFL – Cagliari, Italy, October 2003

  *  French library&information center - Mediatheque opens in Gurdjaani public library (May 2003) 

  *  Group of 7 librarians from Lithuania visit public libraries in Georgian regions (May 2003)  (Open Society - Georgia Foundation, East-East Program)

  *  The British Council presents a new office and a library for English teaching/learning in Tbilisi (April 2003).

  *  IREX_IATP opens a new "Internet Access and Training Center" in Khashuri (April 2003).

  *  Web version of the journal "Sakartvelos BiblioTeka (Georgian Library)" (April 2003), IREX_IATP Small grants program.

  *  The Second "National Library Week" celebrated on 19-30 April 2003 in more then 250 libraries of more then 20 cities and villages of Georgia. Main organizers: GeLA, AIS, Ministry of Culture, supported by Open Society - Georgia Foundation.

  *  T. Czepurnyi (TIB, Hannover), Goethe Institute, Young Scientists' Development Centre, Blackwell Science, Springer make a presentation "Access to electronic scientific materials" , INTAS, and project eIFL Direct,  April 2003 

  *  Ms. Vita Mosuraite (Lithuania), GeLA and Association of Information Specialist organize workshop "School libraries - changing role", April 2003 

  * New Children Library - Media Center established by French Cultural Center, April 2003 

  * Presentation of the new library of the Tbilisi State Medical University, April 2003 

  * Open Society - Georgia Foundation submits grants for development of community services for 3 public libraries in Tbilisi and 8 libraries in Georgian regions, March - April 2003 

  *  Group of 10 Georgian librarians visit libraries in USA (Georgia & Washington DC) supported by Project Harmony and US State Department, February 2003

  *  Group of 16 Georgian librarians visit libraries in USA (Massachusetts &  New York City), January 2003

  *  Conference "University libraries - their role in the process of education", December 2002

  *  Georgian national book depositories suffer from frequent electricity break-offs and mold growth (July – August 2002)  

  *  Tbilisi International Book Fair has more visitors and publications then ever (June 2002)  

  *  Dr. A. Fleming (Germany) and Goethe Institute make a presentation "Libraries in the period of transition in Germany" (May 2002)  

  *  Earthquake in Tbilisi (April 2002) damaged several libraries and Book Chamber. Schools were closed for vacations earlier for safety reasons.  

  *  Professor Engelbert Plassmann .  

  *  The First "National Library Week" was celebrated on 22-27 April 2002 in more then 50 libraries of more then 20 cities and villages of Georgia

  * Georgian Ministry of Culture presents figures for 2001 – 2003 financial plans. Libraries are on the lowest positions as usual (January 2002)


2004-2005 Year Strategy

 

Ø      Development of public libraries (Policies, performance standards and assessment, legislation, introduction of sample mission statement for libraries)

Ø      Rising the role of libraries in the process of education (school libraries, school – public libraries cooperation, higher education libraries)

Ø      Implementation of information technologies in libraries (eIFL, bibliographic databases, integrated library system, web site of association, standards)

Ø      Association building (public relations, creation of Board of Trustees, improvement of communications with regions, foreign partnership projects, establishment "young friends of libraries", General Meeting of Asscoation)

2001 – 2003 Activities

 

Ø      Journal "Sakartvelos Biblioteka" – The First Georgian Journal in Library and Information Domain. Publication of the first issues was generously supported by Open Society Georgia Foundation and Democracy Development Commission

Ø      Public library statistics – Georgian regions (Supported by IREX IATP)

Ø      Tbilisi Public Libraries – More statistics on Tbilisi libraries

Ø      National Library Week  – 2002 (the birth of new tradition in Georgia) (Event organized by GeLA and AIS. Supported by US Embassy, Carnegie Foundation, Open Society – Georgia Foundation, ALA)

Ø      Project "Georgian Bibliographic Databases on the Web" (OSI Supported)

Ø      English- Georgian-Russian On-Line Dictionary of Library and Information terminology (Supported by OSI)
