Prelog City Library and Reading Room, a small library staffed by just two librarians serving the town of Prelog in Croatia, is making a huge impact across the country with its ‘GEL - Guerrilla Education for Librarians’ programme. GEL is an online safety training programme targeting librarians, with a strong training-of-trainers component enabling librarians who have undergone the training to pass on their knowledge to the communities they serve.

Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, thousands of forcefully displaced and traumatized families have taken refuge in the city of Lviv in western Ukraine. The city of Ust-Kamenogorsk in East Kazakhstan is badly polluted. The main atmospheric polluters are the giant metallurgy and chemical companies which pump toxic gases into the air. In addition, the city struggles with solid waste disposal, resulting in unauthorized dumping by citizens, the accumulation of garbage in backyards and litter in the streets, parks and children’s sports grounds.

In December 2023 a group of librarians and open science enthusiasts organized a workshop on Research Data Management (RDM) for Serbian researchers and librarians. They drew on the training methods and materials tested during EIFL and OpenAIRE open science train-the-trainer bootcamps held during 2023. Participants’ feedback was overwhelmingly positive, writes Milica Ševkušić, EIFL Open Access Programme Project Coordinator, who was one of the workshop trainers.
