Dear Sir or Madam,

With this letter we would like to draw your attention towards the project – "electronic information for libraries- direct" –(eIFL). Project initiator is Open Society Institute (Soros Foundation). Our association works on the project since July 2001. We hope that the project will raise your interest.

Main goals of the project are as follows:

For the last 5-6 years the number of library readers has greatly increased. This is due to the growing demand of the society for the newest information and also the insufficient financial resources of citizens and large number of organizations to obtain books, journals and newspapers and other materials, that will satisfy their needs.

Project “eIFL” implies the subscription of electronic versions of the worlds leading Journals for the Georgian libraries, universities and informational centers and provides relevant service for the readers. At present, more than 30 organizations use this huge informational bank, which contains about 7200 scientific journals in the following fields: business and economics, humanitarian and social sciences, politics, medicine etc; nearly 12000 newspapers as well. This informational bank is the product of US company EBSCO (Boston, EBSCO), which is one of the leader companies in processing   and spreading out   the information. This project is the only way gaining access to the newest informational sources and guarantees the effective service for the readers. Recently, large number of journals in educational field has been added to the bank, so that the amount has not increased.

Analogous project operates in more than 50 countries of the world.

Nearly in all of them, financial aid is provided by businessmen. Successful businessman is well aware of the greatest importance of in time access to information.

This project provides unique chance for Georgian students, scholars, businessmen and wider public to access valuable and timely information from world's leading publishers (which is unavailable form them in printed form).

Training workshops and courses facilitating abilities and the right to use electronic media are also the essential tool that GILIS consortium offers the society.

According to the above-mentioned, Georgian library Association ask you to consider the possibility of supporting the project. Your generous decision will make  the implementation of the project possible and greatly contribute to the development of Georgian culture, society- students, library readers and scholars.

Thank you in advance
